Five Unlikely Causes Of Ageing

We would all like to grow old gracefully, embracing our fine lines and accepting our sagging skin without question as it begins its journey south. Yet that’s not quite how it pans out. The inescapable nature of ageing makes it something to be scorned, as we all come to dread the emergence of those unfavourable impressions of time.

However, there are ways in which we can postpone the onset of mature-looking skin and causes of ageing. These pertain to keeping an eye on the following five everyday habits and kicking them into shape to help keep our skin healthy and youthful.

Everyday Habits To Avoid

  • Working Too Hard

If you have been swept up into today’s ‘go go go’ work culture, and your to-do list never seems to end, your stress levels are probably elevated. High amounts of the stress hormone, cortisol, can break down the skin’s collagen supplies, leading to the development of fine lines and wrinkles.

  • Staying Up Late

Cortisol also has a role in regulating sleep. The hormone is secreted as we wake up in the morning, with melatonin being released later in the day, triggering drowsiness. Sleep deprivation causes excessive levels of cortisol to remain in the bloodstream, negatively impacting collagen levels which, in turn, reduces the skin’s elasticity.

    • Dieting

For many, dieting means cutting out certain food groups such as carbohydrates or fats. When the body is not fuelled properly and under-eating is combined with over-exercising, the result is often stress, anxiety and fatigue. This can cause poorly hydrated skin and lead to premature ageing.

  • Social Smoking

The nicotine found in cigarettes restricts blood flow to the skin, meaning that it does not receive all of the nutrients it needs to stay healthy. Good blood circulation promotes cell regrowth which is vital to collagen production. Cigarettes contain more than 4000 chemical components that can harm skin tissue, so even smoking occasionally can cause irreversible damage.

  • Drinking Alcohol

As the body metabolises alcohol, acetaldehyde is released into the body, which causes a hangover and dehydrates the skin. Dehydration triggers breakouts and, over time, leads to an increased visibility in pores and wrinkles. Frequent drinking will also have a major impact on the skin’s natural glow and may figure in the development of rosacea
