Dermal Fillers – Smoker’s Lines (vertical lip lines)

Also commonly known as lipstick lines, smoker’s lines are the rather unsightly creases that extend outwards from the lips, usually more prevalent from the upper lip. The reason they get their nickname is due to the fact that a lot of women first notice these lines when their lipstick starts to “bleed” out from the border of their lips, although these small wrinkles can obviously affect men also. Contrary to their name, it isn’t thought that smoking itself necessarily causes these lines to appear, and rather it is simply down to the effects of premature ageing.

With that said, the overactivity of the muscles when pursing the lips to smoke a cigarette, as well as the breakdown of collagen as a result of smoking also takes its toll on our lips. Sun damage also contributes to the appearance of smokers lines. As our lips gradually lose volume and elasticity, wrinkles, lines and folds soon set in, as with many other areas of the face. Dermal fillers offer a simple solution by plumping out the tissue beneath the skin for a smoother, youthful overlying texture.

Anti-wrinkle injections are also very effective as a treatment for smoker’s lines. For this treatment we do a review at two weeks to check the results and top up free of charge if necessary, subject to practitioners discretion.

Dermal fillers are a non-surgical, injectable treatment with the versatility and the precision to offer bespoke anti-ageing benefits for the skin. Following a precisely tailored treatment plan, your doctor at North West Aesthetics will apply the fillers just beneath the surface of the skin, massaging them in place in order to fill out unsightly smokers lines around the lips.

You should expect a naturally, youthful look to your lips as a result of your dermal filler treatment here at NWA. We restore lost volume and shape, minimising unsightly fine lines with immediate effect. The best results, however, are seen at about 2 weeks post-treatment once the fillers have settled and the skin has healed, and can last up to 12 months.

The procedure should last no longer than 30 minutes, allowing time for a thorough consultation beforehand.

Our experts are capable of achieving the desired results after just one treatment session, although do remember that your results are only temporary. They begin to wear off at about 9-12 months post-treatment, after which you will require repeat treatments to maintain your results. Most of our patients require a top up at 12 months. The fillers can also last longer with each new treatment!

Other than the 30 minutes required for the procedure itself, you will have to take no more time out of your schedule to recover from your treatment. You can comfortably allow your lips to heal and settle as you go about your daily routine, taking care not to aggravate the treatment area while you do so!

The most common side effects include bruising, swelling, redness and tenderness around the treatment area as the skin heals and the fillers settle. There should be no cause for concern and they should subside in no time at all, usually lasting for only around 2 days post-treatment.

Overall, the only candidates unsuitable for this type of treatment would be pregnant and breastfeeding women. Dermal fillers are an ideal minimally-invasive solution to smokers lines, so if you happen to be experiencing any of the unsightly lines and wrinkles mentioned above, do get in touch to schedule a consultation.
