Can Deep Wrinkles Be Treated As Easily As Fine Lines On The Face?

Fine lines on the face and wrinkles are synonymous with ageing. The first faint creases may take up residence around your eyes as early as your twenties and by your forties, you will probably have become familiar with a number of more permanent wrinkles.

Many skincare products and aesthetics treatments claim to fight both fine lines and wrinkles, despite there being notable differences between the two. Before exploring how best to treat each type of ageing, let’s uncover their unique characteristics.

What Is The Difference Between Fine Lines And Wrinkles?

Both fine lines and wrinkles are caused due to structural changes in the skin. The skin is made up of three layers: the epidermis, the dermis and the subcutaneous layer. The epidermis is the outermost band in which the visible signs of ageing are most profound, however, this is brought about by changes in the dermis.

The dermal layer of the skin is made up of fibrous and elastic tissue, which contain high quantities of the proteins collagen and elastin. Once we reach our twenties, these proteins reduce by approximately 1% per year. This means that the skin slowly loses its ability to spring back into place and the signs of ageing begin to set in.

Fine lines begin their life as dynamic wrinkles. These are creases that form when the facial muscles contract to show expression. They mainly appear around the eyes, forehead and mouth and disappear when the face is at rest. However, when the loss of collagen is combined with external factors such as sun exposure, expressive fine lines no longer vanish.

Once creases become permanent, they are known as static wrinkles. As we age, our fine lines mature and turn into deep wrinkles that are clearly visible whether the face is moving or not. This reflects extensive anatomical changes in the dermis. So is it really possible to treat deep wrinkles as easily as fine lines?

Can Deep Wrinkles Be Treated In The Same Way As Fine Lines On The Face?

The most important factor when treating fine lines and wrinkles is to choose a trustworthy and established practitioner.

During pre-treatment consultations, our expert practitioners are able to thoroughly examine your skin and determine which areas of the face require treatment. Depending on the severity of your fine lines and wrinkles, they may suggest a variety of treatment options. Anti-wrinkle Injections, Dermal Fillers and Laser Resurfacing are just a few of the treatments that are effective in combating the signs of ageing.

Fine lines and wrinkles can be treated using the same techniques, however, they may differ in their implementation. Larger amounts of injectable, or more frequent procedures, may be required to treat more permanent static wrinkles, for example. In most cases, a combination of treatments will most effectively reduce the appearance of both fine lines and deep wrinkles.

Anti-wrinkle Injections

Anti-wrinkle Injections block chemical signals from the nerves to the muscles. With small amounts of the substance strategically injected, muscle contraction is inhibited without facial expressions becoming ‘frozen’. As the muscles relax, dynamic wrinkles are reduced, softening the appearance of existing fine lines and preventing new lines from forming.

Dermal Fillers

Dermal Fillers help to diminish wrinkles and restore volume and fullness to the face. Varying quantities can be injected under the surface of the skin to smooth away the deepest of lines.

The fillers used at North West Aesthetics are made from hyaluronic acid, a hygroscopic substance that can attract up to 1000 times its own weight in water. This hydrates the skin whilst plumping up sunken areas.

Laser Resurfacing

Using thermal energy, Laser Resurfacing removes the outermost layers of the skin, promoting cell regeneration. The low-level heat stimulates the production of collagen in the dermis, restoring the skin’s elasticity. New, healthy skin cells leave the face feeling brighter, smoother and fuller.
