Our Top Tips For Summer Skincare

With restrictions and safety measures still very much in place throughout the country, the summer of 2020 might not be quite live up to the sun-scorched months of seasons past, but that doesn’t mean that you should pay your skin any less attention in what’s still likely to be the warmest and brightest period of the year.

At North West Aesthetics, one of the things we’re most passionate about is the health and happiness of all of our patients, so we thought we’d take this opportunity to put our biggest and best summer skincare tips in one place to help you through one of the most unusual summers on record. Enjoy!

Caring for covered-up skin

At present, it’s currently the law to wear a mask or face covering when using public transport or going to the shops. And this can cause our skin all sorts of unexpected problems, from excessive sweating to the aggravation of a number of pre-existing conditions such as acne and eczema.

To make these things less likely, we suggest that you pick a face covering made from a light and breathable fabric such as cotton as well as washing these regularly to reduce the possibility of untimely breakouts. In terms of skincare, you should cleanse no more than twice a day (more on this later) to allow your facial skin to remain sufficiently hydrated despite being covered up for certain parts of the day and apply barrier creams such as Vaseline overnight to soothe any areas of irritation and improve overall skin health.

Switching up your products

Just as you change up your wardrobe to reflect the warmer weather, you should do the same with the items you use as part of your summer skincare routine. To do this, we advise choosing products that are more lightweight and, thus, less likely to have a detrimental effect on the condition of your skin. This means selecting a foaming cleanser – and applying this sparingly to avoid dryness and irritation – and a less heavy moisturiser that won’t leave you with clogged pores and puffy skin. And whilst this should be used throughout the year, we can’t sing the praises of a good SPF enough and recommend that you keep yourself protected from the sun’s rays by integrating a broad-spectrum sunscreen into your regular skincare regime for the duration of this (and every) season.

Don’t overdo it in the shower or the bath

One of the biggest mistakes that people make in the summer is spending too long in the cubicle or the tub. This is because exposing your skin to water that is too hot for a prolonged period of time during the warmer months can dry out the skin and may even trigger an unwelcome eczema flare-up if you already suffer from this condition. In order to avoid this, you should limit the time you spend bathing or showering and only complete these crucial activities in water of an agreeable temperature. Your skin will thank you later!
