How Zoom Has Forced Us To Take A Closer Look At Ourselves

Unless you’ve been living under a rock for the better part of 2020, chances are that you’ll have hopped on at least one Zoom call in the past nine months. And whether you’ve done so for business or pleasure, it’s fair to say that this now-ubiquitous form of video chat has provided us all with a vital source of human contact during a year that has sadly been defined by social distancing and self-isolation.

But things haven’t all been quite so positive. As good as Zoom, Skype and other video-call apps have been in terms of helping us to stay in touch with colleagues, friends and family members, they have also been responsible for shining a spotlight on some of the more undesirable aspects of how we look, with more time in front of the screen increasing our awareness of the fine lines, wrinkles and other prominent impressions of age that contribute to our overall appearance.

There’s a name for this distressing phenomenon – Zoom Face – and we’ll explore this in more detail below.

What is Zoom Face?

Put simply, Zoom Face describes the feeling of unhappiness that comes from having scrutinised every inch of our digital selves.

Throughout the pandemic, many of us have spent more time than is strictly necessary analysing every individual facial expression that we perform over video chat, with the year’s safety restrictions forcing us to come face to face with everything we find off-putting about our appearance and helping us to realise just how unflattering ageing can be.

Because of this, it’s not unheard of for seasoned video chatters to find themselves distracted to such an extent that they spend almost entire Zoom calls obsessing over those previously unnoticed wrinkles and rapidly expanding areas of tired-looking skin, longing all the while for a return to the blemish-free days of youth!

Zoom Face has become such a concern, in fact, that aesthetics clinics, including ourselves, have been overwhelmed with queries about what can be done to combat the many common signs of ageing that have come to light as a direct result of the pandemic.

Get Ready for Christmas

Fortunately, this is something that we specialise in at North West Aesthetics!

With Christmas fast approaching and the promise of several online gatherings with those who are not in our festive bubbles, we’d like to take this opportunity to point you in the direction of a few treatments that can have you looking your best in time for the inevitable round of virtual Christmas meals and digital New Year’s Eve get-togethers.

  • Botox® – One of the most common complaints of those who suffer from Zoom Face is the prominence of wrinkles across several areas of the face, most notably along the forehead, around the mouth and at the corners of the eyes. These things can conspire to create a tired, sometimes angry, appearance – hardly ideal when you’re trying to get into the Christmas spirit! Botox® can help restore some smoothness and vitality to the face by eliminating the lines in question and temporarily inhibiting the muscle movement responsible for the development of such irritating creases and folds. We offer this treatment for all areas of the face – from the brow and the eyes to the mouth and the neck, which means that you’re bound to find something suitable for you!

  • Dermal Fillers – In addition to coming up against unwanted wrinkles, those who frequent Zoom may also have taken issue with how the natural ageing process has left them with sagging skin and a severe loss of volume in several areas of the face.  The hyaluronic acid contained within our Juvederm® dermal fillers can be used to plump out facial features such as the lips, replenish the skin’s natural moisture and fill in any fine lines and wrinkles that have started to deepen over time. The good news is that the effects of these injectables can last for up to 18 months – ample time to enjoy your younger-looking face should we need to enter another lockdown at some point in the future!

  • Chemical Peels – We talk a lot about the benefits of having a chemical peel in winter and this is something that can help to target any skin concerns you may have at a much deeper level. Whether you choose to undergo either of our Obagi® peels or The Perfect Peel™ you’ll be the recipient of a treatment tailored to your individual requirements and one that can combat issues as wide-ranging as sun damage, hyperpigmentation, inflammation and – yes, you’ve guessed it – those hard-to-conceal fine lines and wrinkles!
