More professionally known as “Bruxism,” teeth grinding, or jaw clenching, is a condition without a definitive cause, although there are a number of factors that are thought to be linked. In particular, stress and anxiety, certain medications, sleep disorders and lifestyle factors, like alcohol consumption and smoking, are all known to influence teeth grinding. Most sufferers tend to grind subconsciously, both while awake and during sleep. In a lot of cases there can be no symptoms at all, but when symptoms do occur they can be very debilitating. Teeth grinding can cause pain, headaches, ear aches, sleep deprivation, tooth wear and even broken teeth and fillings.
Anti-wrinkle injections have been found to be an effective treatment for bruxism. The toxin acts as a paralytic in very small doses to minimise muscle spasms for months at a time. This tackles teeth grinding at the source of the problem by weakening the masticatory muscles, while still retaining the ability to function properly, rather than simply masking the symptoms.
